Current Concerns and Issues Before Us: (links may open in a new window)

Sunday, February 6, 2005 Brunch/Discussion event Global Climate Change: The Major Environmental Challenge of the 21st Century.  The brunch/discussion will follow the morning worship service and is being sponsored by the Social Action Committee:

In recent years, a scientific consensus has emerged that the earth’s climate is changing and that human actions are responsible for these changes. Global climate change, also referred to as global warming, results from increased emissions of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and other human activities. While uncertainty still exists regarding some of the details of global climate change, there is little scientific doubt that it is occurring and that it could have serious consequences as we move through this century.

This talk will focus on explaining the scientific basis for global climate change, what its possible impacts may be, and what could be done to address this issue. In addition, the presentation will attempt to clear up some common misconceptions about global climate change, and briefly discuss the current politics of the issue in this and other countries.

Guest speaker: Terrence Bensel, Associate Professor of Environmental Science, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA

On the local level, we have heard from an attorney that for an inmate to make a COLLECT CALL from the Crawford County Jail costs the inmate $10.00.  Does this make sense just for a COLLECT CALL?  Is this just another way to penalize and make people feel extremely hopeless?  This may be something that we as a concerned community might look into correcting.

At our annual congregation meeting on December 7, 2003, the Social Concerns Committee requested those attending to complete a survey listing issues or concerns they were presently involved with or had an interest in learning more.  To see the results of the survey click on the following link: Survey Results Chart

The committee will be reviewing all the results of the survey and present them to the congregation as a means of establishing the issues and concerns for our church.  In the "Other" category, which represented 26% of respondents, the issues that were listed are as follows:
