Social Concerns Committee Highlights-- 2003
In the week after the 9/11 attacks, the church hosted a forum with local clergy, political science and psychology professors to give the community a place to ask questions and come together in a difficult time.
The SCC organized a 24-hour peace vigil at the advent of the war with Iraq. Around the clock, people sat in the opening to the sanctuary with a candle lit to promote a more peaceful way to meet conflict. The vigil opened and closed with a brief worship ceremony.
We have heightened awareness on the anti-death penalty work spearheaded largely by Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Men Walking) by disseminating literature, making announcements from the pulpit, and providing access to a petition that was sent to Harrisburg. (April 2003)
The SCC co-sponsored the Creekfest concert fundraiser to benefit the French Creek Conservancy in April 2003. The pre-concert awards reception was held at our church.
We sponsored the power-point presentation’ Beyond Cigars and Castro’ in May 2003 by the Allegheny College student service group that went to Cuba last year.
We hosted a 6:59er dinner/program event in May 2003 with a presentation by Dottie Walker on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Ms. Walker had spent time in Israel studying the conflict and trying to promote more peaceful solutions.
In June of 2003 the SCC hosted an evening presentation by an American woman living in Nicaragua working to eradicate poverty in that country.
The church’s Welcoming
Congregation Committee, whose goal it is to provide a welcoming haven in our
church for the community’s gay and lesbian population looking for a spiritual
home, is a sub-committee of Social Concerns.
